A Map and Music Activity
Using Freight Train by Elizabeth Mitchell
My kids had a blast for Music Day today as we made a fun music connection to our map/around the world study with Elizabeth Mitchell's song Freight Train. I love this song. It is cute and exciting for kids but mellow and calming too.
Part One: Make a Train! The kids all brought their own chairs over to form the train.
Part Two: Listen to the Song
Part Three: Practice the song (I used an I sing-You Sing method for the four main phrases).
Part Four: Let the kids decide where you should go and sing your own version!

Extension Activity
I plan to pick a variety of forms of transportation and change the song for the rest of the week. Each day we might look at a map and see what kinds of transportation we could use to get to different places! In the original song they take a train to africa, to seattle, etc and in reality you may need a boat or a plane :) This would be a fun way to further the kids learning of cities, states, countries and continents.
For Example:
Big Plane, big plane going so fast....
Steam Boat, steam boat going so fast...
Blue Car, blue car going so fast...
